Safra Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology and Director of the Neuropsychopharmacology Unit at Imperial College London.

After over 40 years of prohibition, new and exciting research is beginning to emerge about the potential medical and therapeutic benefits of cannabis products. However, after a 40 year hiatus, research will take many years to catch up with the questions we need answered about the effectiveness and safety of cannabis as a medicine. With this apparent gap in research, many patients with chronic health conditions are taking action into their own hands and self-medicating with cannabis products. NICE recently reviewed the use of cannabis as a medicine (NICE 2019) and although they have recommended its use for a limited number of conditions (epilepsy, MS and nausea associated with cancer treatment), they have not recommended its use for chronic pain or other chronic health conditions. NICE have stated that more research is needed and cannabis must also become more cost effective to the NHS before NICE will consider endorsing its use.

Professor Nutt talks to us about:

• The issues surrounding drug policy and NICE guidance in relation to the medical use of Cannabis,
• Where he sees things moving over the coming years and the challenges around using cannabis as a medicine.
• How his new cannabis prescribing programme Project Twenty21 will contribute to the body of evidence in relation to the medical use of Cannabis.

This event was co-hosted by the South Eastern and Western Connections Services, funded by the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland.
[/et_pb_text][et_pb_video src=”https://youtu.be/PHj1Hl_-BY0″ _builder_version=”4.9.2″ hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_video][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Is Cannabis the latest flavour of the month or should it become a menu staple to treat chronic health conditions? They will then be offered a 12-week intervention and support programme tailored to the needs of the individual.

The project will target males and females from the age of 18 and above who are subject to probation supervision. Funding is currently available to work with 300 people.

PBNI Assistant Director Stephen Hamilton commented: “76% of people assessed by PBNI have an alcohol or drugs offending related problem. There is a well-established link between drugs, alcohol and crime. In fact, one of the biggest factors that influences whether someone will reoffend is their use of drugs and alcohol. Therefore, tackling this type of behaviour is a priority for probation. It is really important that we are able to quickly respond to crisis situations at whatever time they occur and we believe that this new partnership will help us respond to those in crisis and ultimately rehabilitate people and prevent then re-offending in the future.

“Many of the people we work with have complex needs, such as drug and alcohol addiction combined with chaotic personal lifestyles, homelessness, mental health issues, and and deficits in family and community support. We hope that the interventions provided will also help to impact on some of the related issues.”

ASCERT Chief Executive, Gary McMichael speaking about the new service said: “ASCERT provides services across Northern Ireland that address the impact of alcohol and drugs related issues. We are committed to ensuring individuals, families and communities are supported in the most effective way to deal with the challenges they face. It is important that when people with addiction issues are at a point of crisis they can get the right help quickly in order to stabilise the situation and avoid things becoming uncontrollable, but that can be difficult because of waiting times for services. This partnership with PBNI is an innovative project that will ensure that its service users can get support at the time when they really need it.”
[296,274
268,267,266
post-57656","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-events","category-professional-news","tag-addiction","tag-offending","tag-services
["GET
